OUR STORY
The Onion Skin Journal was birthed by poet Vanessa Root, sometimes known as Rémy Road during her lifelong quest to find the perfect journal. The journals she found lining the shelves of bookstores, felt like fallen soldiers being forced to report for a duty their heart was not into. Produced en masse in factories abroad, she could almost feel the emptiness in them.
She decided she needed to create a journal that wanted to be created.
ONION SKIN PAPER
The first task was picking a paper that held character and heart. She thought back to simpler times when writing letters was an act of bravery. She thought of the letters written between lovers from across oceans durign war times. After some research she discovered that the paper used was an elusive paper called Onion Skin Paper that has all but vanished from production.
It's quality of slight transculency evokes the feeling of a continuous stream of conciousness that is being absorbed by the paper.
Made of 100% wood pulp, this thin paper is surprisingly strong and won't leak through, making it fountain pen and paint friendly.
As the journal is used, this crisp paper, over time develops a limp, almost cockled quality to it's finish- as though, throughout it's journey with you, it is also, growing, changing and alchemizing.
MADE IN AMERICA
Knowing that we wanted the journal made in America, we were turned down by eight companies that produced books. They claimed Onion Skin Paper was too difficult to work with and wouldn't work in their modern machines. That is when we found Anthony in Miami. Working beside his father and son, the three men create these books using turn of the century book making machinery and their own bare hands.
We speak with the bookmakers almost every week, and have a beautiful relationship based on the heart. This love is manifest in the love with which these books are made. And you can feel it.
Smyth Sewn and Lays Flat
Smythe sewn is a durable centuries old book binding technique. This type of binding was specifically chosen for it's ability to allow for our books to lay-flat when writing. No more cheap glue, or curved books. How are you supposed to vibe out like Ernest Hemingway that way?
Pages are carefully hand-folded into signatures and then sewn together. This traditional book making technique is rarely found in the journal world and allows for our books to hold 224 pages.
